Breaking silence: Seeking justice for teacher-student abuse

On Behalf of | Dec 6, 2024 | Childhood Sex Abuse |

If you experienced abuse by a teacher when you were young, you might wonder if it is too late to seek justice. The truth is, it is never too late to break your silence and start your journey toward healing.

Many survivors hesitate to speak up due to fear, shame or confusion about what happened. It is common for the full impact of abuse to surface years or even decades later. This delay is why many states, including New Jersey, have extended their statutes of limitations for childhood sexual abuse cases.

New Jersey law allows child sexual abuse survivors to file civil lawsuits until they turn 55, or within seven years of realizing the abuse caused them harm, whichever comes later. There is also a two-year window for cases previously barred by the statute of limitations, regardless of how long ago the abuse occurred.

Even if you think you have missed the legal deadline, do not let that discourage you. Here is why:

  • Laws change: Recent reforms have expanded the time frame for filing claims. You may have more time than you realize.
  • The discovery rule: In some cases, the clock starts ticking when you connect your current issues to past abuse, not when the abuse occurred.
  • Healing is possible: Regardless of legal outcomes, speaking your truth can be incredibly healing and empowering.
  • You are not alone: By coming forward, you join a community of survivors and advocates fighting for justice and change.
  • Your voice matters: Sharing your story can help protect others and hold institutions accountable.

Remember, seeking justice is not just about legal action. It is about reclaiming your power, finding support and contributing to a world where such abuse is less likely to happen to others.

Taking the next step

If you are considering coming forward, know that there are resources and professionals ready to support you. Reach out to a trusted and experienced attorney, therapist or support group. You have carried this burden alone for too long. It is time to break the silence, seek the support you deserve and take the step toward healing and justice. It is never too late to start that journey.
