What should you do after a car accident?

On Behalf of | Sep 22, 2023 | Personal Injury |

A car accident may happen suddenly and damage your vehicle. The collision may also result in injuries that make it difficult to take care of your daily tasks and return to work.

When you get into a car accident, it is important to stay calm. You should also take certain steps following the collision to protect your interests and improve the likelihood of a full recovery.

Ensure everyone’s safety

Move your vehicle to a safe location if possible, such as the shoulder of the road or a parking lot. Turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers and make sure you and your passengers are safely out of harm’s way.

Contact law enforcement

Call the police to report the accident. Cooperate fully with law enforcement officers when they arrive, provide accurate information and obtain the names and badge numbers of the responding officers.

Gather evidence

Document the accident scene by taking photographs of the vehicles involved, the surrounding area and any visible injuries. This evidence may become valuable when you start to deal with opposing insurance companies.

Seek medical attention

In 2020, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2.1 million visits to the emergency room occurred because of car accidents. Even if you do not feel seriously injured, seek medical attention after a car accident. Some injuries may not be immediately apparent, and a medical evaluation can help you properly document any related health problems you report.

Preserve records

Keep all records related to the accident, including medical bills, repair estimates and correspondence with insurance companies. When seeking compensation for damages, you may need to present these records to preserve your interests.

Keep in mind that recovering from a car accident takes time, patience and perseverance. Continue to document the recovery process and focus on what lies ahead.
